Henschke Wines Facilities Concept

The heritage significance of this well known Eden Valley site was key to determining the form of this proposed addition – quite simply to complement through contrast. A modern steel and glass structure provides a transparent volume to reduce the visual bulk of the three storey building against the traditional stone and corrugated iron building forms. The brief was to provide new administration facilities and a viticulture laboratory with links through to the existing manufacturing and process plants of the winery. There was only one location that allowed for these links, but it needed to address staff facilities and movement, visitors, sightlines from the existing residence, the floodplain of the adjacent creek and workers with muddy boots! It was also critical to build this new facility without disruption to the daily workings of the winery. The creation of these facilities would enable a future reworking of the cellar door and further staged works planned by the client.

Environmental performance was a key driver of this design. The south-east facing double glazed walls allowed for excellent natural ventilation throughout the spaces, without unwanted heat gains. Adjacent roofs allowed the correct orientation for solar panels. The elevated floor plates provide stunning views over the red gum lined creek and acres of adjacent vineyards – a constant visual reminder of the history behind this well known family brand. The charcoal window frames, fascias and trims take reference from the graphic identity and branding of the Henschke label, and the red brick walls link to the existing red brick quoins of the heritage built fabric.
